Don't wind turbines kill birds?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the state of California permitted the construction of wind turbines in a place called Altamont Pass, not realizing that this would have terrible effects on the endangered Golden Eagles in the area. We've written a detailed article on this:

But every knows wind turbines kill birds!

The executive summary of this is pretty simple. Old, small, fast spinning turbines mounted low to the ground on lattice towers can have terrible effects on bird populations. Our new, large, slow spinning turbines mounted high above the ground on solid towers are much less of a problem. One has to survey to make sure the planned wind farm doesn't impact endangered species and then most of the substance of any complaint evaporates.

We'd like to see things like planned wind farms buying some acres of wetlands near their project and setting it aside as a wildlife refuge, the planting of local grasses and shrubs around the bases of towers to benefit local species, and so forth. This is mostly a California issue and we keep hearing of it because Altamont Pass gets constantly studied, while other places aren't as interesting since they're not killing endangered species.
